He edged past Daryl Gurney in a win. Cross edged past Callan Rydz who had accounted for Gerwyn Price in the previous round.
He will take on Jamie Hughes who defeated Jason Lowe. The action continues in Milton Keynes up to the Last 16 stage with Gerwyn Price the latest player to fall.
The Number One seed would have been optimistic of potentially claiming a title today especially with Michael van Gerwen falling early on but despite averaging , he lost to Callan Rydz who averaged Rydz beforehand had produced a average to edge past Ryan Searle after a last leg decider win over Matt Clark.
The performance of the round though came from Daryl Gurney who claimed a win over Devon Petersen to put a dent in his World Matchplay aspirations.
The latter was awfully unlucky like he has been all week with the performances he has been putting in, he averaged to Gurney's but lost out in the end to 'Superchin'.
Martijn Kleermaker produced one of the performances of the round in seeing off Luke Humphries in a last leg decider. With this wristband, a player can move freely within the bubble, which consists of a hotel, restaurant and playing area.
When a player resident in the UK has tested positive, the darts player in question must leave the hotel immediately. Non-UK players are first given the opportunity to make arrangements to self-isolate in the United Kingdom.
They have to go in isolation for two weeks before they can return home. The PDC advises players with Coronavirus symptoms to first undergo a Covid test in their own environment.
In this way a possible wasted trip can be prevented. There are consequences for leaving the bubble. Regardless of the length or content of the trip, a second Coronavirus test will be done and in the meantime a player must go into hotel room isolation.
A second test must be paid by the player himself. It can take up to 12 hours for the results to be confirmed, putting a player at risk of being excluded from participating in any of the Players Championship tournaments during the PDC Summer Series.
Medically qualified doctors are also present at the location. The seedings for events two to five will be based on that day's ProTour Order of Merit, with previous days' prize money included.
Matches from the first round through to the quarter-finals are the best of 11 legs, with the semi-finals being the best of 13 legs and the final being the best of 15 legs.
All players will be tested for Covid before entering their hotel room, where they will self-isolate until the results are due around 12 hours later.
If it's a negative result they'll be able to play, if it's positive then they must leave the premises. Competing players must adhere to social distancing rules and are not allowed to leave the venue for any reason.
Unlike in normal circumstances, each player will now be assigned specific practice boards to use and must also sit at one of the two designated tables situated by their match boards.
To keep numbers of people down in the venue, there will be no voluntary markers on the non streaming boards which means players will be forced to mark and referee matches away from the cameras.
In terms of rules of conduct during the matches, players must only approach the oche when their opponent has retrieved their darts and moved one metre away.
This could affect particularly speedy players. Once a player has finished playing their matches and are no longer required to mark other games, they must return to the players' hotel.
They can not hang around to follow the progress of the tournament. Joyce is now in the provisional qualifying places for the World Matchplay, with the player field set to be confirmed on Sunday evening following the five days of the PDC Summer Series.
I was trying to enjoy the rest of the match and make the score more respectable, but Dave tightened up a bit, he missed his chances and I punished him.
I don't want to be a one-hit wonder and I've got to build on this. Joyce could now be set to return to the Marshall Arena from July to compete in the World Matchplay, should he hold on to his qualifying place in the 16 ProTour Order of Merit positions.
